how to make our sites flashy and appealing

As i was checking some of our members sites in the directory
i ran in to one site on his homepage has a marquee welcomming quests
also a picture uploading service also he had a button for members chat,
as we new people to such hi tech and didnot find way to join sitemap xml to the forum
by the way i wish them all good also we like to make our sites flashy and appealing for members can you kindely explain how to add such scripts to
the beginners and execuse my poor typing skills as all the action done using one finger
